From Manchester to Qom, the story of an English Doctor who became a Shia

Dr. Korosh Khosravi, one of the famous professors of Isfahan University of Technology, sent an article quoting from his undergraduate friend who is now active as a professor at the University of Utah, USA:

I would like to tell an interesting story to my friends that I think is worth spending two minutes of your time.

Asking him how did you come from England to Fayziyeh (Qom Theological Seminary)? His story was very strange. He said that when I was 17 years old and living with my family in Manchester, I went to work part-time in a restaurant and worked in the dishwashing area with a Moroccan and an Englishman. At the end of the night of the first Friday, our English colleague told me and my Moroccan friend that I was going to get a beer. Do you want too? Because I grew up in a moral and not a religious family, they did not consider alcohol to be appropriate for my age, and I did not consume it either. That’s why I rejected his invitation and so did my Moroccan friend. When we were alone together, my Moroccan friend said you did a good job. It is forbidden to consume alcohol.

I asked, what does haram mean?

He said it means God has forbidden it.

It was strange to me that God has entered into the details of human life. I asked where it was banned?

He said in the Qur’an.

I said teach me the Quran.

He said ok and every night after work he studied the Quran with me for half an hour. Then I bought the English version of the Quran and finished it in a week and fell in love with the Quran. Then I realized that in Qom you can understand the Quran deeply. I wanted to go to Qom, my parents said that you will not go anywhere until you get a university degree. I also started university. Besides that, I used to attend the lessons of a Shia cleric who came from Iran. When I got a medical degree and a master’s degree in medical ethics at the same time from Manchester College, I went to Qom and I have been discussing and researching in Qom for 15 years now!

Quran is really a means of guidance.
