Oftentimes when seeking knowledge about the Islamic spiritual tradition, it may happen that, when not accustomed to approaching its texts, the mind can be untrained, and therefore move quickly from point to point, without getting the answers it is seeking. These are a few suggestions on how to apply the mind to studying the tradition. While there are both intellectual and practical aspects to the tradition, their historical and political contexts also need to be understood.
