The renowned French Islamic studies scholar Marie-Pierre Walquemanne, who after converting to Islam had chosen the name Mariam Abou Zahab, died on 1 Nov and as stated in her will, her funeral was held at the holy shrine of Imam Ali (a.s.) in Najaf and her body was buried in a Husseiniyeh on the road from Najaf to Karbala, near the column no. 172.
Mariam Abou Zahab was born in 1952 in a catholic family and converted to Islam when she was 18. She was a PhD graduate of political science from and taught at the Paris Institute of Political Studies. Mariam was also a research fellow at the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations for years, where she studied the social relations between Shias and Sunnis in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The French professor played an active role in reflecting the tragic and violent situation of the Shiites of Pakistan and Afghanistan. During her trips to the West Asian region, Mariam Abou Zahab made several visits to the holy shrines of Shia Imams in Iraq, and met with Iraqi academics and religious authorities. She made a will to be buried aside the path of Arbaeen pilgrims after her death.
